Northwest Club Knocked Out of World Cup

November 11, 2018 | Wayne Hutchison

Many thanks to the NW Club racers who participated in this year's World Cup. On the road side, driving the Lotus 79 at Brands Hatch we had:

Greg Seitz, Andy Fuller, Jimbo Pfeiffer, Brian Bennett, Mathew Suboski, Michael Jones, Dick Mueller, Bryan Barns, Chris Beck, Wayne Hutchison, Edgar Sanchinelli, Steven Paulissen, William Fletcher, and Scott Kukas.

On the oval side, driving the NASCAR Trucks at Michigan, we had:

Loren Arden, Bryan Barns, Wayne Hutchison, Ray Partridge, Brian Bennett, Jeff Stabnow, Nick Kuhn, Dee Palmer, William Fletcher, Dick Mueller, Steven Paulissen, Chris Beck, Drew LaLonde, Jimbo Pfeiffer, and Scott Kukas.

The competition started with qualifying races on 11/3 and when the day was over we were seeded 5th overall, behind Finland, UK&I, DE-AT-CH, and Canada. This set us up for head-to-head matches with Canada in both oval and road races on 11/10. The road races were first up, and we quickly fell behind 1-0 (losing 88-33) as many of our drivers had some bad luck in race 1. We struck back in race 2, winning 62-59 to tie it up 1-1 and force a rubber match. That's when our best hopes ran into trouble and we lost 71-50 and were knocked out of the road competition. Canada will now face Finland next weekend in the semi-finals.

The oval races had a similar theme with Canada winning round 1 72-49 before we stormed back to win round 2 68-53. So it all came down to the final race. We fought hard and had drivers scoring points in 2nd, 3rd, 6th, and 10th places. As the laps wore down Jeff Stabnow and Loren Arden were rapidly gaining on the leader Mathew Bell of Canada, but ran out of time, finishing just 1/2 second behind him as the checkered flag flew. The scoring was very tight, with Canada winning 64-57. If we had been able to catch and pass Bell, the final score would have been 61-60 for us! That's how close the battle was!

Great racing by all and a sincere thanks to all who participated for the club this year. It was a lot of fun and a lot of great racing. We'll get 'em next year! :)

World Cup X Coming Soon

October 07, 2018 | Wayne Hutchison

It's almost that time of year again. Time for the World Cup of iRacing! This is a worldwide competition that pits iRacing clubs against one another to see which club is the best. The Northwest Club has competed very well in over the last few years and we'd like to maybe go one better this year - and win the World Cup!!!

The World Cup is divided into 3 rounds - Qualifying, Knockout, and Final Four.

Up first on November 3rd is the all important Qualifying Round. We need to have a minimum of 10 drivers (and hopefully many more than that) compete in one or more Qualifying Races that will be held that day. There will be two types of races for you to participate in: NASCAR Truck at Michigan for 50 laps and/or the Lotus 79 at Brands Hatch for 30 minute races. All races are OPEN setups. You can compete in as many of the races as you wish that Saturday. Only your best result will count towards the club points. All races will be found in the HOSTED RACES section on iRacing.

The top 16 clubs from the Qualifying Round will move on to the Knockout Round the following week, and the four clubs that survive the Knockout Round will face off in the Final Four races on November 17th. There are some pretty nice prizes this year too: Drivers on the winning team get $50 in iRacing credits, 6 randomly selected drivers who participate in the Qualifying Round will also receive $50 in iRacing credits, and the winning team will receive a nice trophy. It won't be easy but maybe we can win some of these goodies this year :)

For more details on the event, check out this link https://docs.google.com/document/d/1kuzukIQKMB7IG8AvpnJcM3u9r2zhsNsIZ7z2fy4Y_7Y/edit

Hope to see you on the track on 11/3 - do us proud!

September 09, 2018 | Nick Kuhn

Hello Northwest! The Northwest Club is happy to be back from a short break with a new season! Starting this Thursday (9/13/2018) we will be running a Thursday Night Late Model fixed setup series.

Session opens up at 7pm pacific for practice. Qual at 8pm, you get 4 laps and 10 minutes to show what you can do. Race kicks off at 8:10pm and should last 30-45 minutes. We will have off weeks for Major’s races and Thanksgiving. This is the same car we finish the Major’s with and will be great practice.

Everyone in the Northwest is welcome, including all skill levels. Chances are we have someone already at a similar level. Historically this league has had great racing throughout the field!

NW Club Drivers Compete In And Win Majors 24 Hours of Le Mans

June 25, 2018 | Wayne Hutchison

The Majors 24 Hours of Le Mans was held on June 23/24 with 30 cars taking the green flag. Ten of those teams featured drivers from the Northwest Club, totalling 17 NW Club drivers in all. The teams and drivers were: Grizzly Motorsports (Treavor Vavrosky), DogBear Racing (Ray Partridge, Dick Mueller, Wayne Hutchison, Nick Kuhn), The RutgersKev Show (Paul Garinger), MountainWest Motorsports (Mark Rediker, Bryan Barns), Majors Ferrari (Dan Garber), Elite West Racing (Ryan Worley), Majors HPD (William Fletcher, Chris Beck, Carl Burk), RoadHog Racing (Mike Ouellette), Alliance Racing (Jimbo Pfeiffer, Brian Bennett), and Unorthodox Motorsports (Matt Gelder).

The overall winning team in the LMP1 class was Grizzly Motorsports. They completed 420 laps in their Audi R18 to win by 33 seconds over Workiva Kinetic Racing's Porsche 919 team. Treavor drove 45 laps and led 3 of them to help his team achieve this great victory! DogBear Racing finished 7th in LMP1, with MountainWest coming in 8th in class (15th overall). Unfortunately, Alliance and Unorthodox didn't make it to the end of the race. The RutgersKev Show team finished 5th in the HPD class (12th overall) while the Majors HPD team failed to finish after a rather nasty accident. In the GTE class, The Majors Ferrari team came home 4th (19th overall), Elite West were 5th (20th overall), and RoadHog were 8th (25th overall).

Overall it was a great event with a lot of great racing, strategy, and even some spectacular crashes! If you'd like to get involved in the Majors Series, you can find out more about it at www.pacificmajors.com.

Finland Wins World Cup Armageddon

June 10, 2018 | Wayne Hutchison

The 2018 running of the World Cup Armageddon race went off on Saturday afternoon, June 9th. Twenty-six cars started the event, with 6 drivers representing the NW Club. Clubs competing were Northwest, Finland, Scandinavia, New York, New Jersey,, DE-AT-CH, New England, Ohio, Michigan, and Carolina. The drivers for your Northwest club were Jared Morgan, Bryan Barns, Gary Nichols, Jackson Steiner, Bill Daily, and Wayne Hutchison.

This race was a 30 minute long wreck fest using Street Stockers at Oxford Plains. Our plan was to rack up the incidents early while trying to eliminate as much of the competition as possible. Unfortunately, due to the lack of hard walls at Oxford, it took a long while to wreck a car to the point that it had to take a fast repair (of which each driver had 3 to use). As such, while we accumulated 653 incident points, there were still only 3 cars not running at the end of the race. The Finns were the first to realize that this race might actually go all 30 minutes and sent out a rabbit in the name of Teemu Toikka to take the lead of the race and try to get as far ahead of the pack as possible. Once we realized this we were already several laps behind Teemu and changed our focus to taking him out of the race. He proved to be a wily competitor though and somehow managed to escape serious injury. Teemu led 71 of the 88 laps completed to take the win by 3 laps when the checkered flag finally fell after 30 minutes. Teemu's win gave the 2018 Armageddon championship to Finland and left our defending champion Northwest team wanting a do-over :)

Thanks to all who came out and raced this year. Everyone that participated had a really good time. Let's get a huge team together for 2019 and take back our crown!

NW Club Finishes 3-7-9 in World Cup Enduro

April 28, 2018 | Wayne Hutchison

The weekend of April 21/22 saw three teams from the Northwest Club take part in the 2018 World Cup Endurance race, in the Mustang FR500S at Watkins Glen. There were 13 teams that started the 24 hour race with teams from Canada (4), Northwest (3), UK&I (2), Auz/NZ (1), DE-AT-CH (1), New York (1), and New Jersey (1). The three Northwest teams were:

Northwest 1: Bryan Barns, Jimbo Pfeiffer, Chris Beck, Dick Mueller, Brian Bennett, Eric Boulton, and Dan Garber

Northwest 2: Mike Ouellette, William Fletcher, Bill Daily, Steven Paulissen, Gary Nichols, and Edgar Sanchinelli

Northwest 3: Ray Partridge, Christopher Sherburn, Dee Palmer, Wayne Hutchison, Scott Kukas, and Nick Kuhn

Twenty-four hours is a long time but all 3 NW teams brought their cars home to finish the race. NW3 had some early trouble, spinning and hitting a guard rail about 7 hours into the race. This required a 38 minute pit stop to install a new engine before they could get going again, 17 laps down. NW1 had a little trouble in the last hours when they couldn't get their car to take fuel. By the time the problem was solved, they had lost over 2 laps to the leading Canadian team and there wasn't enough time left to make it back up. NW2 had a relatively uneventful race with only minor incidents. At the finish NW1 was 3rd, 3 laps behind the winner, NW2 was 7th, 14 laps back, and NW3 grabbed 9th place, 25 laps adrift.

Great effort by all involved and some great results for our club! Next up in the World Cup is the Armageddon race on June 6th, where we are the defending champions.

World Cup of iRacing - 24 Hours of Watkins Glen Endurance Team Race

March 30, 2018 | Wayne Hutchison

Date of Race: April 21st, 2018

Session Opens: 7:00am Pacific

Green Flag: 7:30am Pacific

Track: Watkins Glen Classic Boot

Car: Mustang FR500S

Setups: Open

Qualifying Sessions:

Starting March 29th at 5:00pm Pacific and running through April 8th - 4 Hour Open qualifying sessions starting at 5pm, 11pm, 5am, 11am most days (not all sessions available all days). Sessions will be in the “Hosted” section on iRacing.

Team Formation:

The Northwest Club can have multiple teams in this event; the actual number of teams depending on a number of factors. As long as we have at least 21 drivers set qualifying times we should be able to field 3 teams.

There are two ways that teams will be created to represent the Northwest Club:

1) Fastest qualifiers who can commit to race grouped together into teams

2) “Pre-registered” teams consisting of between 5 and 8 NW Club members who want to race as a team. (Note: all drivers must set a qualifying time to be allowed to race on any team)

For now, what we need to do is:

1) Get as many drivers to set qualifying times as possible

2) Have any team “owners” that want to pre-register a team send me a PM with the list of drivers and name of the “team manager” so I can get the team registered for the race. (no guarantee that all pre-registered teams will get into the race)

3) Have any “setup gurus” put their Mustang setups in the “NW Setup Garage” forum on iRacing ( http://members.iracing.com/jforum/forums/show/860.page )

Thanks in advance to all Northwest Club members who give this a try. Our club has always been very competitive in the World Cup of iRacing and to continue that tradition we need lots of participation!

If you have any questions, you can:

a) PM me directly

b) Post in the “NW Club General Discussion” area of the iRacing forums

c) Post in the NW Club Discord #general channel https://discord.gg/h8Te7sh

d) Post in the NW iRacers group on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/groups/nwiracers/

Survey Results and Next Steps

March 10, 2018 | Wayne Hutchison

The survey results are in! Over the course of February 78 NW Club league members took the time to respond to a survey asking for their preferences as to types of races they like most, which cars, which nights of the week, etc. And here's what we found out:

1) Dirt racing, either oval or GRC, just isn't that popular amongst the membership, at least not yet. So we won't be running any dirt series in the near future.

2) Paved track road racing is popular and the vast majority want to race cars like the GT3's that we are racing this season. So we'll continue with another GT3 season, running on Monday nights. The format will be a 60 minute qualifying session starting at 7pm Pacific followed by a 30 minute race at 8pm.

3) Short track paved oval racing is also popular and the majority have said they want to race "mid-level" cars. Next season we'll run the SK Modifieds in 100 lap races and we'll follow the official iRacing SK Mods series schedule as closely as we can. The big change is that we'll be moving the Short Track series races from Tuesday nights to Wednesday nights. Practice at 7pm, Qualifying at 7:55, Green flag at 8pm.

4) Tuesday nights will now feature a new series - NASCAR Monster Cup cars on 1 mile and larger speedways using iRacing FIXED setups. We'll attempt to follow the NIS Fixed schedule as closely as we can and use the same weather as NIS. Races will be set to last approximately 45 minutes and will be great practice for the official NIS races later in the week.

Look for more information regarding schedules coming in the near future.

Northwest Club Needs You in the Majors Series

November 22, 2017 | Wayne Hutchison

The Majors Series hit a big milestone today. We now have over 500 drivers signed up for the 2018 season. There are drivers from every club on iRacing, covering every region around the globe. Of those 500+ drivers, the Northwest Club (where the Majors Series started) has just 32 drivers registered. That puts us behind Australia (64), Iberia (51), and Carolina (39). We have over 1000 iRacers in the NW Club and about 450 members of the NW Club League. I'm sure we can do better than just 32 drivers in the biggest racing series in iRacing!

If you want more information about the Majors Series, just go to http://www.pacificmajors.com/ to read all about it. One of the many championships we race for is the "Governors Cup" which is awarded to the club that scores the most points throughout the season. The Northwest Club has won this cup every year so far and we don't intend for that streak to be broken in 2018. So take a look, sign up if you think it's for you http://www.pacificmajors.com/register and be prepared to really enjoy yourself.

The NW Club will be holding special practice and race events to prepare for each of the Majors Series races so don't be afraid that you don't know how to drive certain cars, tracks, or how to set up these cars. We have enough experts in the club to help you figure it out!
